Preparing Faithfully for Retirement

By Chris Compton

One of the most important financial decisions we make is preparing for retirement. Most all of us want to retire someday. Many even have a picture in their heads of what retirement will look like — all the things they wish to do.

For Christians, saving for retirement is not only a financial decision. It is also much more — an act of wisdom, stewardship, and preparation. Since everything we have is the Lord’s, we have a responsibility to manage our finances faithfully, and that includes preparing responsibly for the future.

Some Christians feel tension around retirement planning because they wonder if planning demonstrates a lack of faith. However, Scripture resolves that tension. The Bible praises wise preparation. Proverbs 21:5 indicates careful thought and planning leads to abundance.

Retirement savings should never become our idol or the source of our security. Saving for retirement is not about putting more trust in money than God. It is simply being wise and faithful with the money God has entrusted to us. We demonstrate our faith when we manage God’s provisions wisely for our futures. Beyond the motivations, consider two practical reasons retirement planning is important.

  • We should seek to avoid putting undue stress on our families. While it is tempting to think we will work forever, a season is likely coming when we can no longer work a full-time job or earn the income to which we have become accustomed. Saving for retirement allows us to replace income and provide peace of mind for the last quarter of our lives.

  • Retirement preparation today provides greater freedom tomorrow. This freedom is not only financial. Preparation allows us freedom to continue serving as the hands and feet of Jesus. Many people think retirement is simply about stopping work, but for Christians, retirement can open new doors, along with new opportunities for ministry and service. With more time on their hands, retirees can volunteer in churches, disciple younger believers, go on mission trips, or support ministries financially in ways they could not earlier in life. When we save for retirement, we are not only saving for our financial future, but we are also saving for our future ministry.

Planning for retirement may seem daunting. It does not have to be. Practical retirement planning often begins with simple, consistent habits. Contributing regularly to a retirement account allows savings to grow steadily over time, with the added benefit of compound interest. Starting early is especially important because time is one of the greatest tools for retirement savings. Even small monthly contributions grow significantly over time. The key is consistency through all stages and changes in life.

Ultimately, retirement planning is a stewardship issue. The question is what we will do with the resources, opportunities, and abilities God has provided to us. Preparing faithfully for retirement honors the Lord with our money now while preparing us to serve Him in every season of life — a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness and our trust in His provision.
